Summary

The PiezoRx pedometer shows potential for measuring sedentary time, correlating strongly with the Actical accelerometer. However, it is not as accurate as the ActivPAL inclinometer or Fitbit Flex for this purpose.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the validity and reliability of the PiezoRx pedometer for measuring sedentary time compared to the Actical accelerometer.
  • To compare sedentary time measurements from the Fitbit Flex and ActivPAL inclinometer against the Actical accelerometer.

Main Methods:

  • Thirty-five participants (ages 11-69) wore five devices (two PiezoRx pedometers, Actical accelerometer, ActivPAL inclinometer, Fitbit Flex) for up to one week.
  • Participants logged daily device wear-time.
  • Sedentary time data from each device was analyzed and compared.

Main Results:

  • The PiezoRx pedometer's sedentary time estimates were not statistically different from the Actical accelerometer (p>0.05).
  • However, PiezoRx and Actical sedentary time were significantly higher than those from the ActivPAL and Fitbit Flex (p<0.001).
  • Strong correlations were observed between all devices, with the highest between Actical and PiezoRx (R²=0.93). Error in sedentary time measurement, particularly compared to the ActivPAL, was associated with standing time.

Conclusions:

  • The PiezoRx pedometer may be a statistically equivalent alternative to the Actical accelerometer for measuring sedentary time.
  • The PiezoRx pedometer's accuracy for sedentary time is questionable when compared to the ActivPAL inclinometer and Fitbit Flex.
  • Further research is needed to refine the use of pedometers for sedentary behavior assessment.
