Attribution Theory

13.8K
Behavior is a product of both the situation (e.g., cultural influences, social roles, and the presence of bystanders) and of the person (e.g., personality characteristics). Subfields of psychology tend to focus on one influence or behavior over others. Situationism is the view that our behavior and actions are determined by our immediate environment and surroundings. In contrast, dispositionism holds that our behavior is determined by internal factors (Heider, 1958).

Fundamental Attribution Error

13.8K
According to some social psychologists, people tend to overemphasize internal factors as explanations—or attributions—for the behavior of other people. They tend to assume that the behavior of another person is a trait of that person, and to underestimate the power of the situation on the behavior of others. They tend to fail to recognize when the behavior of another is due to situational variables, and thus to the person’s state. This erroneous assumption is...

Attribution

299
In social interactions, individuals frequently seek to understand the motivations and causes behind others' behaviors. This fundamental aspect of social perception, known as attribution, plays a crucial role in shaping interpersonal relationships and guiding future actions. Attribution refers to the cognitive process through which people infer the reasons behind others' behaviors, allowing them to assess character traits, intentions, and situational influences.Attribution Theory and Its...

Personal Choice and Fate Attributions

178
Some individuals interpret life events as a consequence of their personal choices and actions, while others believe that outcomes are dictated by fate or destiny. This divergence in perspective has been examined in psychological and cross-cultural studies, particularly in relation to religious faith and cultural beliefs about causality.Fate and Personal ResponsibilityPeople who emphasize personal responsibility view events as direct consequences of their decisions. For instance, breaking a leg...

Stress and Mental Health

955
Chronic stress profoundly affects mental health, significantly influencing mood, behavior, and overall quality of life. Research closely links chronic stress with mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders. Ongoing exposure to stress can lead to physiological and psychological changes, initiating a cycle of emotional distress and maladaptive coping mechanisms.
Individuals with depression often experience challenges in both their personal and professional...

Defining Psychology01:24

Defining Psychology

7.9K
Psychology is the scientific discipline dedicated to understanding both observable behavior and the internal mental processes underlying such behavior. It aims to comprehend human nature and apply this understanding to solve practical problems, enhance well-being, and improve societal outcomes. An example of psychology's application is the study of prosocial behavior, such as why and under what conditions individuals might help strangers in need. This process involves describing observed...

Summary

This study introduces Mental Profile Mapping, a novel authorship attribution method. It offers psychological insights into single-candidate authorship, identifying 2 of 5 plays likely written by Aphra Behn.

Area of Science:

  • Computational linguistics
  • Psycholinguistics
  • Literary forensics

Background:

  • Current authorship attribution methods often use opaque machine learning algorithms, limiting psychological interpretation.
  • Few methods exist for single-candidate authorship, typically requiring extensive data and lacking psychological measures.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Introduce Mental Profile Mapping, a new authorship attribution technique for single-candidate problems.
  • Ground the new method in scientific research on language and psychology.
  • Provide deeper psychological interpretation beyond probability scores.

Main Methods:

  • Established baseline performance using the "unmasking" technique on Aphra Behn's works.
  • Introduced and validated Mental Profile Mapping's psychometric properties via a "bogus insertion" method.
  • Applied Mental Profile Mapping to canonical Aphra Behn plays for attribution.

Main Results:

  • Both "unmasking" and Mental Profile Mapping suggest 2 of 5 questioned plays are likely by Aphra Behn.
  • The remaining 3 plays showed a poor fit with Behn's psychological profile.
  • Mental Profile Mapping provided unique, deeper psychological interpretations of the results.

Conclusions:

  • Mental Profile Mapping is a viable new technique for single-candidate authorship attribution.
  • The method offers valuable psychological insights into linguistic authorship.
  • Attribution results suggest a revised understanding of Aphra Behn's oeuvre.
