Light Acquisition02:16

Light Acquisition

9.6K
In order to produce glucose, plants need to capture sufficient light energy. Many modern plants have evolved leaves specialized for light acquisition. Leaves can be only millimeters in width or tens of meters wide, depending on the environment. Due to competition for sunlight, evolution has driven the evolution of increasingly larger leaves and taller plants, to avoid shading by their neighbors with contaminant elaboration of root architecture and mechanisms to transport water and nutrients.

Photoreceptors and Plant Responses to Light02:00

Photoreceptors and Plant Responses to Light

28.5K
Light plays a significant role in regulating the growth and development of plants. In addition to providing energy for photosynthesis, light provides other important cues to regulate a range of developmental and physiological responses in plants.

Scatter Plot01:15

Scatter Plot

11.9K
The most common and easiest way to display the relationship between two variables, x and y, is a scatter plot. A scatter plot shows the direction of a relationship between the variables. A clear direction happens when there is either:

Constructing a roadway embankment over uneven terrain requires precise leveling to ensure stability and proper drainage. Surveyors use a leveling instrument and staff to calculate ground elevations and determine the required fill material at each point along the embankment alignment. The process begins by positioning a leveling instrument near a benchmark with a known elevation. A backsight reading establishes the instrument height, which serves as a reference for subsequent measurements. A...

The Wave Nature of Light02:12

The Wave Nature of Light

61.5K
The nature of light has been a subject of inquiry since antiquity. In the seventeenth century, Isaac Newton performed experiments with lenses and prisms and was able to demonstrate that white light consists of the individual colors of the rainbow combined together. Newton explained his optics findings in terms of a "corpuscular" view of light, in which light was composed of streams of extremely tiny particles traveling at high speeds according to Newton's laws of motion.

Role of Vitamins in Maintaining Bone Health01:25

Role of Vitamins in Maintaining Bone Health

5.5K
The growth and maintenance of bone are regulated by a combination of nutritional factors, including vitamins, such as vitamin A, B12, C, D, and K.
Vitamin A
Vitamin A is involved in the process of bone remodeling. Retinoic acid, the active metabolite of Vitamin A, has nuclear receptors in osteoblasts and osteoclasts, which are involved in bone remodeling.
Vitamin B12
Vitamin B12 acts as a cofactor during the formation of osteoblast-related proteins, such as osteocalcin. Vitamin B12 plays a role...

    Area of Science:

    • Biopharmaceutical formulation
    • Protein characterization
    • Analytical chemistry

    Background:

    • Bevacizumab (Avastin®) patents are expiring, increasing interest in biosimilar development.
    • Protein aggregation is a critical challenge in formulating monoclonal antibody drugs like bevacizumab.
    • Dynamic light scattering (DLS) is a suitable technique for analyzing protein size and aggregation without sample dilution.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the hydrodynamic dimensions, aggregates, and aggregation onset of bevacizumab using DLS.
    • To maintain the native structure of bevacizumab during DLS analysis.
    • To assess the utility of DLS for characterizing commercial bevacizumab formulations and supporting biosimilar development.

    Main Methods:

    • Characterization of bevacizumab (Altuzan®) using dynamic light scattering (DLS).
    • Evaluation of intensity, volume, and number-based particle size distribution profiles.
    • Determination of aggregation onset by monitoring changes with increasing temperature.

    Main Results:

    • Hydrodynamic dimensions and aggregation profiles of bevacizumab were successfully investigated.
    • The aggregation onset of the bevacizumab formulation was determined against increasing temperature.
    • Native protein structure was preserved during DLS measurements.

    Conclusions:

    • Preserving the native structure of commercial bevacizumab formulations in DLS measurements is feasible.
    • DLS analysis of native bevacizumab formulations provides valuable insights for product characterization.
    • This approach supports the development and characterization of bevacizumab biosimilars.
