Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence and characteristics of DEBs across different adult age groups in Cyprus.
  • To compare risk factors for DEBs in adolescence, young adulthood, and middle adulthood.

  • A cross-sectional study involving 1716 participants from the I.Family study in Cyprus.
  • Participants completed the Eating Attitudes Test-26 (EAT-26); a score of ≥20 indicated risk for DEBs.
  • Age groups included: adolescence (12-18), young adulthood (25-45), and middle adulthood (46-60).

Main Results:

  • Middle adulthood participants exhibited higher mean EAT-26 scores compared to younger groups.
  • Young adulthood women showed the highest prevalence of binge eating (35%) and laxative/diet pill/diuretic use (12%).

Conclusions:

  • Disordered eating behaviours are not limited to adolescence and can manifest across the lifespan.
  • Public health initiatives should consider the presence of DEBs in various adult age demographics.
