Rise of Liquid in a Capillary Tube

When very thin cylindrical tubes, called capillaries, are dipped in a liquid, the liquid rises or falls in the tube compared to the surrounding liquid. This phenomenon is called capillary action. Capillary action occurs due to the combination of two opposing forces: the cohesive forces of the liquid, which cause it to stick to itself and form a rounded shape, and the adhesive forces between the liquid and the walls of the container, which cause the liquid to be attracted to the container walls.

X-linked Traits

In most mammalian species, females have two X sex chromosomes and males have an X and Y. As a result, mutations on the X chromosome in females may be masked by the presence of a normal allele on the second X. In contrast, a mutation on the X chromosome in males more often causes observable biological defects, as there is no normal X to compensate. Trait variations arising from mutations on the X chromosome are called “X-linked”.

Background:

Scholars hypothesize economic downturns exacerbate racial discord, but empirical evidence remains inconclusive.
Previous research primarily examined infrequent, violent indicators like hate crimes, potentially missing subtler forms of racial animosity.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the link between economic downturns and racial animosity using more nuanced measures.
To determine if economic hardship influences White attitudes towards Black individuals and their societal outcomes.

Main Methods:

Utilized four studies employing various methodologies, including attitude assessments (explicit and implicit), stereotype endorsement, and evaluations of inequality.
Examined real-world outcomes such as music chart success for Black artists and electoral success for Black politicians during economic downturns.

Main Results:

Economic downturns correlated with decreased warmth and increased negative explicit and implicit attitudes from White individuals towards Black individuals.
During downturns, White participants were more accepting of stereotypes and viewed intergroup inequality as more natural.
