Background:

  • Bipolar disorder (BD) is a mood disorder associated with neurological alterations.
  • Ocular structures may be affected in BD, but comprehensive analysis is limited.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate visual function and retinal structural changes in bipolar disorder patients.
  • To explore correlations between observed retinal changes and visual performance.

Main Methods:

  • Visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, and color vision were assessed in 30 BD patients and 80 controls.
  • Optical coherence tomography (OCT) analyzed macular and peripapillary retinal layers.
  • Correlation analyses were performed between structural and functional parameters.

Main Results:

  • BD patients exhibited poorer color vision and reduced macular thickness, including the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL), ganglion cell layer (GCL), and inner plexiform layer (IPL).
  • Inner nuclear layer (INL) was thickened, and peripapillary RNFL thickness was reduced.
  • Significant correlations were found between visual acuity and RNFL, Pelli-Robson score and IPL, and color vision and GCL thickness.

  • These structural deficits correlate with visual function impairments, suggesting potential biomarkers for BD.
