Work accidents are a significant occupational health issue. This study found that overweight, less educated, and less experienced workers face higher accident risks, highlighting the need for targeted prevention programs.
Area of Science:
- Occupational Health and Safety
- Industrial Hygiene
- Petrochemical Safety
Background:
- Work accidents and injuries represent a critical occupational health and safety challenge.
- Petrochemical industry workers face unique occupational hazards.
- Understanding risk factors for accidents is crucial for prevention.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine the prevalence of occupational accidents among frontline workers in a petrochemical company.
- To identify key demographic, lifestyle, and health factors associated with work accidents.
Main Methods:
- A cross-sectional study was conducted with 404 frontline workers at Arya Sasol Petrochemical Company, Bushehr, Iran.
- Random sampling was employed for participant selection.
- Statistical analyses included the chi-squared test and logistic regression using SPSS version 18.
Main Results:
- The overall occupational accident rate was 9.2%.
- Significant associations were found between accidents and body mass index, education level, job experience, smoking, sedative use, and sleep disorders.
- Adjusted odds ratios indicated that higher body mass index (OR 2.41) increased accident risk, while higher education (OR 0.25) and greater job experience (OR 0.29) decreased risk.
Conclusions:
- Targeted preventive programs are essential for industrial workers.
- Specific focus should be placed on young workers, smokers, overweight individuals, and those with psychosomatic conditions.
- Interventions should address identified risk factors like BMI, education, and job experience to reduce occupational accidents.
