Half-life of a Reaction02:42

Half-life of a Reaction

39.2K
The half-life of a reaction (t1/2) is the time required for one-half of a given amount of reactant to be consumed. In each succeeding half-life, half of the remaining concentration of the reactant is consumed. For example, during the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide, during the first half-life (from 0.00 hours to 6.00 hours), the concentration of H2O2 decreases from 1.000 M to 0.500 M. During the second half-life (from 6.00 hours to 12.00 hours), the concentration decreases from 0.500 M to...

Characteristics of Life

262.0K
Biology is a natural science that studies life and living organisms, including their structure, function, development, interactions, evolution, distribution, and taxonomy. The field's scope is extensive and divided into several specialized disciplines, such as anatomy, physiology, ethology, genetics, and many more. All living things share a few key traits, including cellular organization, heritable genetic material and the ability to adapt/evolve, metabolism to regulate energy needs, the...

Influence of Parents and Peers on Identity

581
Adolescence is a pivotal period of identity formation, during which individuals begin to answer questions central to their sense of self, such as "Who am I?" and "Who do I hope to become?" Both parents and peers play critical roles in guiding adolescents through this complex developmental phase.

The Angiosperm Life Cycle02:39

The Angiosperm Life Cycle

72.7K
Plants have a life cycle split between two multicellular stages: a haploid stage—with cells containing one set of chromosomes—and a diploid stage—with cells containing two sets of chromosomes. The haploid stage is the gamete-producing gametophyte, and the diploid stage is the spore-producing sporophyte.

Self-Help Support Groups01:28

Self-Help Support Groups

359
Self-help support groups are voluntary, community-based organizations that provide a platform for individuals with shared concerns to exchange support, insights, and practical strategies for coping with life challenges. Typically led by group members or paraprofessionals, these groups form a cornerstone of mental health care, especially in reaching populations that are underserved by traditional healthcare systems.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Emergency Medicine Training

Background:

  • Evaluating the long-term effectiveness of Basic Life Support (BLS) training is crucial for healthcare professionals.
  • Peer-led training models offer a scalable approach to BLS education for pharmacy students.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the performance and retention of Basic Life Support (BLS) skills in pharmacy students 120 days post-peer-led training.
  • To compare the BLS skills of students trained via a peer-led model with those from a previous training cohort.

Main Methods:

  • An observational study involving third-year Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) students (n=148) who underwent peer-led BLS training.
  • High-fidelity mannequin simulations were used to assess BLS skills 120 days after training.
  • Performance metrics were compared against a control group (n=22) from two years prior.

Main Results:

  • Students demonstrated significant retention of BLS skills at 120 days.
  • Marked improvements were observed in responsiveness assessment (96% vs. 41%), breathing assessment (100% vs. 32%), pulse assessment (96% vs. 36%), and ventilation (100% vs. 32%).
  • High-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) initiation was also numerically superior in the trained group (100% vs. 86%).

Conclusions:

  • Peer-led BLS training leads to significant improvement and sustained retention of critical BLS skills among pharmacy students.
  • This training modality is effective in enhancing BLS competency for future healthcare providers.
