Higher Mental Functions of the Brain: Language01:10

Higher Mental Functions of the Brain: Language

3.9K
Language is a system of communication that allows the expression of thoughts, ideas, and feelings. The brain processes language in both hemispheres.
Language formation and comprehension take place in the dominant hemisphere. The dominant hemisphere is responsible for understanding the meaning of spoken, written, or sign language, as well as the ability to communicate. For most people, the left hemisphere is the dominant one. The right hemisphere, then, gives tone and emotional context to the...

Higher Mental Functions of Brain: Learning and Memory

2.1K
Memory is one of the most vital higher mental functions of the brain. Memory is closely related to learning because it enables us to retain information and experiences from our past to use them in our present life. It also helps us to remember facts, events, and skills, such as riding a bike or swimming. There are two types of memory — declarative memory, which involves memorizing facts or events, and procedural memory, which enables us to remember how to do something like writing or...

Stress and Mental Health01:30

Stress and Mental Health

955
Chronic stress profoundly affects mental health, significantly influencing mood, behavior, and overall quality of life. Research closely links chronic stress with mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders. Ongoing exposure to stress can lead to physiological and psychological changes, initiating a cycle of emotional distress and maladaptive coping mechanisms.
Individuals with depression often experience challenges in both their personal and professional...

Conservation of Small Populations02:04

Conservation of Small Populations

17.4K
Small population sizes put a species at extreme risk of extinction due to a lack of variation, and a consequent decrease in adaptability. This weakens the chances of survival under pressures such as climate change, competition from other species, or new diseases. Large populations are more likely to survive pressures such as these, as such populations are more likely to harbor individuals that have genetic variants that are adaptive under new stresses. Small populations are much less...

What is Population Genetics?01:25

What is Population Genetics?

64.8K
A population is composed of members of the same species that simultaneously live and interact in the same area. When individuals in a population breed, they pass down their genes to their offspring. Many of these genes are polymorphic, meaning that they occur in multiple variants. Such variations of a gene are referred to as alleles. The collective set of all the alleles within a population is known as the gene pool.

Population Growth00:57

Population Growth

28.7K
Population size is dynamic, increasing with birth rates and immigration, and decreasing with death rates and emigration. In ideal conditions with unlimited resources, populations can increase exponentially, which plots as a J-shaped growth rate curve of population size against time. This type of curve is characteristic of newly-introduced invasive species, or populations that have suffered catastrophic declines and are rebounding.

Summary

Many adults with mental health issues delay seeking professional help until their problems significantly impair daily functioning. Promoting early intervention and support for subthreshold conditions is crucial to reduce the burden of mental disorders.

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Mental Health Research
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Delayed help-seeking exacerbates the personal and societal costs of mental disorders.
  • Understanding moderators of early help-seeking is vital for effective intervention.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine rates of early help-seeking for non-psychotic mental health problems in a community sample.
  • To identify clinical and sociodemographic factors influencing help-seeking behavior.

Main Methods:

  • Cross-sectional telephone interviews with 2683 adults (16-40 years) in the Swiss Canton of Bern.
  • Utilized Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview for mental health assessment and Social and Occupational Functioning Assessment Scale for functioning.
  • Assessed past and current help-seeking behaviors.

Main Results:

  • 41.8% reported mental health problems; 31.5% met criteria for a current disorder.
  • 35.3% reported lifetime help-seeking (28.3% past, 7.0% current treatment).
  • Help-seeking was primarily linked to the number/type of problems, mediated by functional impairment, older age, lack of a partner, and prior treatment.

Conclusions:

  • A significant gap exists in help-seeking for mental health conditions.
  • Individuals often delay seeking help until functional impairment is substantial, increasing mental disorder costs.
  • Campaigns should emphasize psychosocial functioning and support for subthreshold problems for indicated prevention.
