Background:

  • Pacific Islanders (PIs) are an underrepresented group in biomedical research.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the feasibility of collecting saliva samples from Pacific Islanders (PIs) using a CBPR approach.
  • To explore the motivations and experiences of PI saliva donors.

Main Methods:

  • Saliva samples were collected by trained and trusted PI community leaders at partner sites in Southern California.
  • A total of 214 saliva samples were obtained from PI donors.

Main Results:

  • The CBPR approach proved feasible for collecting saliva samples from PIs.
  • Over half of the 214 donors were females aged 18-35.
  • Donors cited a desire to contribute to science and their community as motivation.
