Fischer Projections02:18

Fischer Projections

16.6K
Learning to draw Fischer projections of molecules and understanding their relevance plays a crucial role in the visual depiction of organic molecules. A Fischer projection is a two-dimensional projection on a planar surface to simplify the three-dimensional wedge–dash representation of molecules. This is especially helpful in the case of molecules with multiple chiral centers that can be difficult to draw. Here, all the bonds of interest are represented as horizontal or vertical lines. While...

EPS and iPS Cells in Disease Research

3.4K
Embryonic and induced pluripotent stem cells are excellent models for disease research because of their ability to self-renew and differentiate into most cell types. Somatic cells from a patient are isolated and reprogrammed into induced pluripotent stem cells or iPSCs. These iPSCs are later differentiated into the desired cell type, which mirrors the diseased cell of the patient. In this way, disease models have been created for investigating diseases such as Down syndrome, type I diabetes,...

Different notations are used to represent the three-dimensional structure of molecules on two-dimensional surfaces. One of the most commonly used representations is the dash-wedge formula. The dashed wedges, solid wedges, and the plane lines indicate the groups situated behind the plane, coming out of the plane, and in the plane, respectively.
The organic molecules rotate across the single bonds leading to numerous temporary three-dimensional structures of varying energy known as...

Self-Help Support Groups01:28

Self-Help Support Groups

359
Self-help support groups are voluntary, community-based organizations that provide a platform for individuals with shared concerns to exchange support, insights, and practical strategies for coping with life challenges. Typically led by group members or paraprofessionals, these groups form a cornerstone of mental health care, especially in reaching populations that are underserved by traditional healthcare systems.

Nursing Implementation01:15

Nursing Implementation

6.2K
Implementation is the execution of the nursing care plan developed during the planning phase.
The five steps to implementing effective nursing care include reassessing the patient, reviewing and revising the existing nursing care plan, organizing the resources and care delivery, anticipating and preventing complications, and implementing nursing interventions.

iPS Cell Differentiation

3.1K
The ability of induced pluripotent stem cells or iPSCs to differentiate into most body cell types has stimulated repair and regenerative medicine research over the past few decades. iPSC-derived blood cells, hepatocytes, beta islet cells, cardiomyocytes, neurons, and other cell types can repair injuries or regenerate damaged tissue in diseases such as diabetes and neurodegenerative disorders.

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Health Services Research
  • Supported Employment

Background:

  • Individual Placement and Support (IPS) is a proven supported employment model for individuals with severe mental health conditions.
  • Implementation of IPS services has historically faced challenges with consistency and speed.
  • The "Making IPS Work" project aimed to facilitate IPS adoption in six NHS Mental Health Trusts in England.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To establish high-fidelity IPS services within existing clinical teams.
  • To ensure the sustainability of IPS services beyond the demonstration project.
  • To evaluate the implementation process and outcomes of IPS in diverse NHS settings.

Main Methods:

  • Monitoring job placements for individuals with mental health conditions across six sites over 18 months.
  • Conducting independent fidelity assessments at three sites to evaluate service quality.
  • Interviewing stakeholders to understand experiences with IPS service development and implementation.

Main Results:

  • A total of 421 open employment positions were secured for individuals with mental health conditions.
  • All assessed sites achieved 'Good Fidelity' standards for IPS practice.
  • IPS services were well-received by service users, clinical staff, and management.

Conclusions:

  • Successful IPS implementation requires integration into broader psychosocial service strategies and coordinated decision-making.
  • Sustaining IPS services post-project is challenging, particularly given current NHS funding pressures.
  • While fidelity and acceptance are high, long-term financial viability is a critical barrier to widespread IPS adoption.
