Magnetic Field Due to Two Straight Wires01:18

Magnetic Field Due to Two Straight Wires

4.7K
Consider two parallel straight wires carrying a current of 10 A and 20 A in the same direction and separated by a distance of 20 cm. Calculate the magnetic field at a point "P2", midway between the wires. Also, evaluate the magnetic field when the direction of the current is reversed in the second wire.

Household Wiring And Electrical Safety01:13

Household Wiring And Electrical Safety

1.7K
Companies that supply power to most modern households use three conductors, typically called a three-wire line. While one is neutral, the other two are both at 120 V but with opposite polarity, giving a voltage of 240 V between them. With a three-wire line, high-power appliances that require 240 V, such as electric stoves and clothes dryers, are linked between the two hot lines. 120 V appliances can be connected between the neutral and either of the hot lines. The neutral side, which is always...

Magnetic Field Due To A Thin Straight Wire

6.2K
Consider an infinitely long straight wire carrying a current I. The magnetic field at point P at a distance a from the origin can be calculated using the Biot-Savart law.

Magnetic Force On Current-Carrying Wires: Example01:22

Magnetic Force On Current-Carrying Wires: Example

2.2K
In a magnetic field, moving charges encounter a force. If a wire contains these moving charges, i.e., if the wire is carrying a current, then a force acts on the wire as well. Consider a pair of flexible leads holding a wire that is 40 cm long and 10 g in weight in a horizontal position. The wire is placed in a constant magnetic field of 0.40 T, as shown in Figure 1(a). Determine the magnitude and direction of the current flowing in the wire needed to remove the tension in the supporting leads.

Lewis Acids and Bases02:33

Lewis Acids and Bases

48.4K
In 1923, G. N. Lewis proposed a generalized definition of acid-base behavior in which acids and bases are identified by their ability to accept or to donate a pair of electrons and form a coordinate covalent bond.
A coordinate covalent bond (or dative bond) occurs when one of the atoms in the bond provides both bonding electrons. For example, a coordinate covalent bond occurs when a water molecule combines with a hydrogen ion to form a hydronium ion. A coordinate covalent bond also results when...

Base Excision Repair01:54

Base Excision Repair

26.4K
One of the common DNA damages is the chemical alteration of single bases by alkylation, oxidation, or deamination. The altered bases cause mispairing and strand breakage during replication. This type of damage causes minimal change to the DNA double helix structure and can be repaired by the base excision repair (BER) pathways. BER corrects damaged DNA sequences by removing the damaged base and restoring the original base sequence using the complementary strand as a template.
The first step of...

Area of Science:

  • Materials Science
  • Condensed Matter Physics
  • Superconductivity

Background:

  • Magnesium diboride (MgB2) is the lightest known superconducting material.
  • Lightweight superconducting wires are crucial for applications where mass reduction is critical, such as in aerospace and wind energy.
  • Pure aluminum is mechanically weak for use as a sheath in composite wires, hindering densification and structural integrity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and characterize a novel, lightweight MgB2 superconducting wire.
  • To improve the mechanical properties of the aluminum sheath for enhanced wire performance.
  • To assess the electrical and mechanical properties of the developed wire for potential applications.

Main Methods:

  • Fabrication of a single-core MgB2 wire using the internal magnesium diffusion (IMD) method.
  • Sheathing the MgB2 core with a titanium (Ti) diffusion barrier and a novel aluminum composite (HITEMAL) stabilized by nano-sized γ-Al2O3 particles.
  • Evaluation of critical current densities and mechanical stress tolerances at low temperatures.

Main Results:

  • The developed MgB2/Ti/HITEMAL wire exhibited high critical current densities.
  • The wire demonstrated significant tolerance to mechanical stress, indicating good mechanical robustness.
  • The novel aluminum composite sheath provided necessary structural support and prevented detrimental reactions.

Conclusions:

  • The ultra-lightweight MgB2 wire possesses excellent superconducting and mechanical properties.
  • The use of HITEMAL as a sheath material overcomes the limitations of pure aluminum.
  • This lightweight superconducting wire is a promising candidate for aviation, space, and offshore wind generator applications.
