Summary

Brushing with a dry toothbrush or a prewetted toothbrush showed similar plaque removal efficacy. Prewetting a toothbrush did not significantly impact perceived cleaning ability or stiffness, with both methods reducing plaque by over 57%.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the plaque removal effectiveness of dry brushing versus prewetted brushing.

Main Methods:

  • Secondary analysis of data from two previous experiments involving 46 systemically healthy participants (≥18 years).
  • Participants performed single-brushing exercises with either a dry or prewetted toothbrush without dentifrice.
  • Plaque scores were measured before and after brushing; participant perceptions were also recorded.

Main Results:

  • Plaque score reduction was 58% for dry brushing and 57% for prewetted brushing, a non-significant difference (P=0.096).
  • Prewetting the toothbrush did not significantly affect perceived filament stiffness (P=0.410) or cleaning capability (P=0.449).

  • Both methods achieved significant plaque reduction, exceeding 57% on average.
