    Background:

    • Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) and thyroid diseases are common endocrine disorders.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the prevalence and characteristics of thyroid diseases in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT).

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of 434 patients with PHPT.
    • Evaluation included laboratory tests and ultrasonography to identify thyroid abnormalities.
    • Patients were categorized based on known or unknown thyroid diseases prior to PHPT diagnosis.

    Main Results:

    • Thyroid disease was present in 60% of PHPT patients; nearly one-third were previously undiagnosed.
    • Newly diagnosed and previously known thyroid diseases showed similar characteristics, predominantly affecting postmenopausal females.
    • Toxic nodular goiter was more prevalent in patients with previously known thyroid disease.

    Conclusions:

    • A significant proportion of PHPT patients have coexisting thyroid disease, often undiagnosed.
    • The clinical presentation of newly diagnosed and previously known thyroid diseases in PHPT patients is comparable.
    • Further research is warranted to understand the implications of this association.
