The WaveOne Gold (WOG) system generated significantly less vertical force during root canal shaping compared to the original WaveOne (WO) system. This finding suggests WOG may offer a safer instrumentation experience in endodontics.
Area of Science:
- Endodontics
- Dental Materials Science
- Biomechanical Engineering
Background:
- Root canal shaping involves mechanical instrumentation to prepare the root canal system.
- Vertical forces generated during shaping can impact procedural safety and outcomes.
- Evaluating new instrumentation systems for reduced procedural risks is crucial.
Purpose of the Study:
- To compare the vertical forces induced by WaveOne (WO) and WaveOne Gold (WOG) systems during root canal shaping.
- To assess differences in apical and coronal forces between the two reciprocating systems.
Main Methods:
- Maxillary premolar root canals (n=30) were shaped using either WO or WOG Primary instruments.
- Vertical forces in apical and coronal directions were measured during instrumentation.
- Statistical analysis included Mann-Whitney U test for peak forces and Student t test for instrumentation time.
Main Results:
- Both WO and WOG systems showed increased forces with successive instrument use.
- WO generated significantly higher peak forces in both apical and coronal directions compared to WOG.
- Significant differences were observed in the first and third apical insertions (P < .01) and first and second coronal insertions (P < .05).
Conclusions:
- The WaveOne Gold system produced significantly lower vertical forces than the original WaveOne system.
- WOG may offer a reduced risk of procedural complications due to lower induced forces.
