Hearing01:31

Hearing

57.3K
When we hear a sound, our nervous system is detecting sound waves—pressure waves of mechanical energy traveling through a medium. The frequency of the wave is perceived as pitch, while the amplitude is perceived as loudness.

Student t Distribution01:31

Student t Distribution

14.2K
The population standard deviation is rarely known in many day-to-day examples of statistics. When the sample sizes are large, it is easy to estimate the population standard deviation using a confidence interval, which provides results close enough to the original value. However, statisticians ran into problems when the sample size was small. A small sample size caused inaccuracies in the confidence interval.
The Student t distribution was developed by William S. Goset (1876–1937) of the...

Microsoft Excel: Student's t-Test

1.7K
Student's t-test in Microsoft Excel is a statistical method used to compare the means of two groups to determine if they are significantly different from each other. It's commonly used to evaluate hypotheses, such as testing whether a treatment has an effect compared to a control group. Excel provides built-in functions to perform t-tests, making it accessible for users needing to conduct basic statistical analysis.
To conduct a t-test in Excel, use the T.TEST function or the "Data...

Comparing Experimental Results: Student's t-Test

6.0K
The t-test is a statistical method used to compare the sample mean with a population mean or compare two means from two data sets. The test statistic is calculated from the standard deviation, mean, and number of measurements in the data set at a selected confidence interval and then compared to a table of critical values at this confidence level. If the test statistic is smaller than the critical value, the null hypothesis is accepted. In this case, we state that the difference between the...

Design Example: Maintaining Level of an Embankment

444
Constructing a roadway embankment over uneven terrain requires precise leveling to ensure stability and proper drainage. Surveyors use a leveling instrument and staff to calculate ground elevations and determine the required fill material at each point along the embankment alignment. The process begins by positioning a leveling instrument near a benchmark with a known elevation. A backsight reading establishes the instrument height, which serves as a reference for subsequent measurements. A...

Role of Vitamins in Maintaining Bone Health01:25

Role of Vitamins in Maintaining Bone Health

5.5K
The growth and maintenance of bone are regulated by a combination of nutritional factors, including vitamins, such as vitamin A, B12, C, D, and K.
Vitamin A
Vitamin A is involved in the process of bone remodeling. Retinoic acid, the active metabolite of Vitamin A, has nuclear receptors in osteoblasts and osteoclasts, which are involved in bone remodeling.
Vitamin B12
Vitamin B12 acts as a cofactor during the formation of osteoblast-related proteins, such as osteocalcin. Vitamin B12 plays a role...

Area of Science:

  • Healthcare Education
  • Audiology
  • Pediatric Nursing

Background:

  • Effective newborn hearing screening is crucial for early detection of hearing loss.
  • Nursing students require specialized training to administer universal newborn hearing screening (UNHS) accurately.
  • Clear communication of screening results to parents is essential for timely intervention.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of a training program designed for nursing students.
  • To assess the program's ability to improve skills in administering UNHS, recording results, and explaining outcomes to parents/guardians.
  • To determine the impact of the National Center for Hearing Assessment and Management (NCHAM) training on student competency.

Main Methods:

  • Nursing students from the first and third semesters participated in the study.
  • Students completed the NCHAM Utah State University™ Universal Newborn Hearing Screening (UNHS) training.
  • Knowledge assessment and surveys were administered before and after the training intervention.

Main Results:

  • All participating students demonstrated a benefit from the UNHS training program.
  • The training enhanced students' understanding and application of newborn hearing screening procedures.
  • Post-training assessments indicated improved knowledge in result recording and parent communication.

Conclusions:

  • The NCHAM UNHS training program is effective in equipping nursing students with essential skills.
  • Implementing such training is vital for ensuring competent healthcare professionals in pediatric audiology.
  • Improved student competency in UNHS can lead to better health outcomes for newborns.
