Summary

This study supported United States veterans in baccalaureate nursing programs, enhancing their retention and success through tailored interventions. The program successfully met its goals, encouraging veterans to pursue nursing careers.

Background:

Initiative to boost enrollment, retention, and academic success for US veterans in baccalaureate nursing programs.
Supported by a grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) in partnership with the Departments of Defense and Veteran Affairs.

Purpose of the Study:

To address challenges faced by student veterans in nursing programs.
To develop and implement supportive interventions for veteran students.
To facilitate veterans' transition into professional nursing careers.

Main Methods:

Identified challenges specific to student veterans.
Developed targeted support programs including mentorship, tutoring, and equine therapy.
Facilitated integration with university veteran services.

Main Results:

Positive feedback received from 32 student veterans regarding academic and personal support.
Favorable experiences reported by 16 faculty and staff working with student veterans.

Conclusions:

Continuous program assessment confirms achievement of intended outcomes.
The program effectively provides opportunities for veterans to enter the nursing profession.
Successful model for supporting veteran transitions into healthcare careers.
