    Background:

    • Cholangiocarcinoma is a challenging malignancy to diagnose and stage.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare the efficacy of Magnetic Resonance (MR) imaging and Computed Tomography (CT) in detecting and staging cholangiocarcinoma.
    • To evaluate MR imaging's potential in visualizing tumor characteristics and extent.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of MR and CT scans from nine patients with histologically confirmed cholangiocarcinoma.
    • Comparison of image quality, contrast enhancement, and demonstration of tumor features between MR and CT.

    Main Results:

    • Both MR and CT identified soft-tissue masses in seven of nine patients.
    • MR provided better contrast between tumor and surrounding tissues in three patients.
    • MR demonstrated vessel displacement/encasement and distal tumor extension (metastases, lymphadenopathy) more clearly than CT.
    • CT was more readily able to demonstrate intrahepatic bile duct dilatation.

    Conclusions:

    • MR imaging is an effective modality for the detection and staging of cholangiocarcinoma.
    • MR offers advantages in visualizing tumor extent and its relationship with adjacent vessels.
    • Combined imaging approaches may be beneficial for comprehensive assessment.
