    Acute hypercarbia in dogs caused significant gastrointestinal bleeding and lesions. Alpha-adrenergic stimulation may contribute to this bleeding, as phenoxybenzamine treatment reduced blood loss and lesions.

    Background:

    • Severe hypercarbia (elevated carbon dioxide in the blood) is associated with gastrointestinal bleeding in patients.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effects of experimental acute hypercarbia on the gastrointestinal tract in dogs.
    • To explore potential mechanisms, including vasoconstriction and adrenergic stimulation, contributing to gastrointestinal bleeding during hypercarbia.
