Pharmacovigilance

1.8K
Post-marketing surveillance is a critical component of pharmaceutical regulation, often uncovering unanticipated adverse drug reactions (ADRs) once a drug is widely used over an extended period.
This process, termed pharmacovigilance, aims to detect, evaluate, and minimize harmful effects related to medication use. The data collection for pharmacovigilance depends on spontaneous reporting systems, where healthcare professionals or patients voluntarily report suspected ADRs.
In some cases, there...

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Pharmacovigilance
  • Drug Safety

Background:

  • Side effects of cancer therapy significantly impact patient well-being.
  • Pharmacovigilance, monitoring drug safety, is vital in oncology due to treatment complexities.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify critical challenges in implementing effective pharmacovigilance within oncology.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic literature search of multiple databases (PubMed, Embase, etc.) from 2012-2018.
  • Inclusion of studies, guidelines, and reports on pharmacovigilance in chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and targeted therapy.
  • Critical appraisal of 44 relevant articles and 10 research reports.

Main Results:

  • Identified eight major issues in oncology pharmacovigilance.
  • These include challenges in terminology, side effect range, targeted therapies, chemoradiotherapy, generics/biosimilars, drug interactions, special populations, and under-reporting of adverse drug reactions (ADRs).

Conclusions:

  • Highlighting the importance of oncology pharmacovigilance is essential for enhancing patient safety.
  • Efforts in pharmacovigilance can improve the quality of life for cancer patients during treatment.
