Background:

  • Root canal obturation aims to create a fluid-tight seal to prevent bacterial ingress.
  • Void formation during obturation can compromise treatment success and lead to persistent infection.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the frequency and volume of voids in root canals obturated with single-cone versus GuttaCore techniques using micro-computed tomography (micro-CT).

Main Methods:

  • Forty decoronated single-rooted teeth were instrumented and irrigated.
  • Samples were obturated using either the single-cone (n=20) or GuttaCore (n=20) technique.
  • Micro-CT was used to analyze void presence and volume in coronal, middle, and apical thirds.

Main Results:

  • Statistically significant differences in void frequency and volume were observed in the middle third and external voids in the coronal third (p<0.05).
  • Both techniques showed significant internal and external void differences within their respective groups (p<0.05).

Conclusions:

  • The GuttaCore technique yielded superior obturation with fewer voids in the coronal and middle thirds compared to the single-cone technique.
  • Obturation results for both single-cone and GuttaCore techniques were comparable in the apical third (p>0.05).
