Summary

Omega-3 fatty acids show promise in reducing osteoarthritis symptoms by decreasing inflammation and oxidative stress. Conversely, saturated fatty acids may worsen osteoarthritis, highlighting the importance of dietary fat types in joint health.

Background:

  • Osteoarthritis (OA) pathophysiology is increasingly linked to systemic factors beyond mechanical loading, including obesity-induced lipotoxicity.
  • Dietary fatty acids, particularly their distinct effects on inflammation, are implicated in OA development.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review current studies on the effects of different dietary fatty acid types on osteoarthritis and joint tissues.
  • To summarize the impact of omega-3, omega-6, saturated, and monounsaturated fatty acids on OA markers.

Main Methods:

  • Review of existing animal and human in vitro and intervention studies.
  • Analysis of fatty acid effects on inflammatory markers, cartilage degradation, oxidative stress, pain, and function in OA.

Main Results:
