Cognitive Therapy01:25

Cognitive Therapy

1.1K
Cognitive therapy, pioneered by Aaron T. Beck in the 1960s, is a structured approach to addressing psychological distress by focusing on the influence of thoughts on emotions and behaviors. All cognitive therapies involve the basic assumption that human beings have control over their feelings, and that how individuals feel about something depends on how they think about it. Unlike psychoanalytic methods that delve into unconscious processes or humanistic approaches emphasizing...

Beck's Cognitive Therapy

401
Cognitive therapy is a psychological approach designed to address distortions in thinking, which can lead to negative emotions and unrealistic beliefs. These cognitive distortions often influence how individuals interpret and respond to situations, exacerbating emotional distress. Below are some prevalent cognitive distortions, their characteristics, and examples of how they manifest in thought processes.

Cognitive Dissonance

37.5K
Social psychologists have documented that feeling good about ourselves and maintaining positive self-esteem is a powerful motivator of human behavior (Tavris & Aronson, 2008). In the United States, members of the predominant culture typically think very highly of themselves and view themselves as good people who are above average on many desirable traits (Ehrlinger, Gilovich, & Ross, 2005). Often, our behavior, attitudes, and beliefs are affected when we experience a threat to our...

Disorders of Acid-Base Balance01:29

Disorders of Acid-Base Balance

2.1K
The human body maintains a precise pH range of arterial blood between 7.35 and 7.45. Deviations result in either acidosis (pH < 7.35) or alkalosis (pH > 7.45). These conditions are further classified as respiratory or metabolic disorders based on their underlying cause.
Respiratory Acidosis and Alkalosis
Respiratory acidosis occurs due to an increase in the partial pressure of carbon dioxide PCO2 in the blood. It often arises from shallow breathing or impaired gas exchange caused by...

Intrinsically Disordered Proteins02:18

Intrinsically Disordered Proteins

19.6K
Intrinsically disordered proteins are a group of proteins that do not fold into specific three-dimensional structures. Their structural flexibility allows them to complement ordered proteins to perform functions that are inaccessible to rigid structures. They are more common in eukaryotes than prokaryotes and may either be exclusively intrinsically disordered or hybrid proteins, consisting of a mix of ordered and disordered regions. The absence of a rigid structure in these proteins can be...

Impact of Individuals on Individuals01:30

Impact of Individuals on Individuals

389
Human behavior is intricately shaped by social influences that arise from interactions with others in diverse contexts. These influences not only mold beliefs and attitudes but also drive the regulation of behaviors through both direct communication and observational learning. The study of these processes falls within the domain of social psychology, which seeks to understand how individuals are affected by and affect those around them.Mechanisms of Social InfluenceDirect social influence...

Summary

A new tailored internet-based cognitive-behavioural therapy (ICBT) program demonstrated effectiveness for depression, comparable to standard ICBT. However, its efficacy for social anxiety and panic disorder requires further investigation.

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Digital Health
  • Psychotherapy

Background:

  • Internet-based cognitive-behavioural therapy (ICBT) is established for treating depression, panic disorder, and social anxiety.
  • Disorder-specific ICBT programs are widely used in routine care.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To benchmark a new, individually tailored ICBT program (TAIL) against disorder-specific ICBT for depression, social anxiety, and panic disorder.
  • To evaluate the non-inferiority of TAIL compared to established ICBT treatments.

Main Methods:

  • A benchmarking study design was employed.
  • Effect sizes (Cohen's d) were calculated for TAIL and disorder-specific ICBT across different conditions.
  • Participant numbers for depression (TAIL: n=284, routine care: n=2358) and other conditions were recorded.

Main Results:

  • TAIL showed non-inferior effects for depression (d=1.33) compared to disorder-specific ICBT (d=1.35).
  • For social anxiety, TAIL (d=0.74) was not found to be inferior to disorder-specific ICBT (d=0.81).
  • For panic disorder, TAIL (d=1.11) was not found to be inferior to disorder-specific ICBT (d=1.47).

Conclusions:

  • The findings support TAIL as a viable alternative to disorder-specific ICBT for depression.
  • Further research may be needed to optimize TAIL for social anxiety and panic disorder.
