Background:

  • Obesity is a known risk factor for a prothrombotic state, increasing the likelihood of thromboembolic events.
  • Bariatric surgery is a common intervention for obesity, but its impact on blood coagulation requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effect of bariatric surgery and subsequent weight loss on blood coagulation.
  • To assess changes in hemostatic parameters using traditional coagulation tests and thromboelastography (TEG).

Main Methods:

  • Blood samples were collected from 18 patients undergoing bariatric surgery.
  • Traditional coagulation tests, hs-CRP, and TEG parameters (R, K, α, MA, G, LY60) were analyzed preoperatively, 1 day postoperatively, and 6 months postoperatively.

Main Results:

  • Preoperatively, elevated maximum amplitude (MA), clot strength (G), and hs-CRP were observed.
  • Postoperatively, fibrinogen and D-dimer levels increased, with D-dimer normalizing but fibrinogen remaining elevated.
  • Thromboelastography indicated persistent hypercoagulation at 6 months, with elevated MA and G.

Conclusions:

  • Bariatric surgery patients exhibit hemostatic abnormalities indicative of hypercoagulation for at least six months post-surgery.
  • This suggests a sustained elevated risk for thromboembolic events following bariatric procedures.
