Vision01:24

Vision

60.1K
Vision is the result of light being detected and transduced into neural signals by the retina of the eye. This information is then further analyzed and interpreted by the brain. First, light enters the front of the eye and is focused by the cornea and lens onto the retina—a thin sheet of neural tissue lining the back of the eye. Because of refraction through the convex lens of the eye, images are projected onto the retina upside-down and reversed.

Color Vision01:24

Color Vision

1.5K
Color perception begins in the retina, the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye. Two main theories explain how colors are seen: the trichromatic theory and the opponent-process theory. The trichromatic theory, proposed by Thomas Young in 1802 and extended by Hermann von Helmholtz in 1852, suggests that color vision is based on three types of cone receptors in the retina. These cones are sensitive to different but overlapping ranges of wavelengths corresponding to red, blue, and green.

Velocity of an Object01:18

Velocity of an Object

207
Understanding how an object moves along a path requires distinguishing between motion over a time span and motion at a precise moment. A useful example is a vehicle traveling along a straight and level path, where its position at any given time is known. The initial step in analyzing this motion is to measure how far the vehicle travels over a fixed time period. This measurement, called average velocity, is computed by dividing the total change in position by the duration over which the change...

Predator-Prey Interactions02:39

Predator-Prey Interactions

21.7K
Predators consume prey for energy. Predators that acquire prey and prey that avoid predation both increase their chances of survival and reproduction (i.e., fitness). Routine predator-prey interactions elicit mutual adaptations that improve predator offenses, such as claws, teeth, and speed, as well as prey defenses, including crypsis, aposematism, and mimicry. Thus, predator-prey interactions resemble an evolutionary arms race.

Elimination Kinetics: First-Order and Zero-Order01:05

Elimination Kinetics: First-Order and Zero-Order

2.9K
Eliminating drugs from the body is a vital process that occurs through excretion or metabolism. Understanding the kinetics of drug elimination is crucial for drug development, dosage determination, and optimizing patient outcomes.
Drug clearance depends on the rate of drug elimination and its plasma concentration. Another important parameter is a drug's half-life, which is the time required for its concentration to decrease by half. In most cases, drug clearance follows first-order...

Summary
This summary is machine-generated.

Stroboscopic vision training using Nike Vapor Strobe® can improve perceptual-motor skills, unlike other methods that increase attentional demand. This training enhances the acquisition of new skills by perturbing visual input.

Area of Science:

  • Perceptual psychology
  • Motor learning
  • Human-computer interaction

Background:

  • Stroboscopic vision training has shown promise for enhancing perceptual processing and perceptual-motor skills.
  • Different stroboscopic vision methods offer unique visual experiences, necessitating an examination of their specific effects.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the performance and acquisition effects of various stroboscopic vision methods.
  • To compare the impact of intermittent visual perturbation versus visual elimination on perceptual-motor skill acquisition.

Main Methods:

  • Experiment 1: Within-subject design assessing multiple object tracking (MOT) performance under different stroboscopic conditions (Nike Vapor Strobe®, PLATO visual occlusion, intermittent display) at varying frequencies (5.6, 3.2, 1.8 Hz).
  • Experiment 2: Mixed design study evaluating the acquisition of a multiple object avoidance (MOA) task following practice with Nike Vapor Strobe® or PLATO visual occlusion compared to normal vision.

Main Results:

  • MOT performance was maintained with Nike Vapor Strobe® regardless of frequency, but declined with PLATO and intermittent displays at lower frequencies, indicating increased attentional demand.
  • The PLATO group showed poorer practice performance in the MOA task, while the Vapor Strobe group demonstrated superior post-test success and reduced error compared to normal vision and PLATO groups.

Conclusions:

  • Both intermittent visual perturbation and elimination increase attentional demands.
  • Intermittent perturbation, exemplified by Nike Vapor Strobe®, facilitates perceptual-motor skill acquisition, whereas visual elimination does not.
