Summary

Sensory modulation dysfunction (SMD) may be a risk factor for Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS). Individuals with sensory under-responsiveness showed a significantly higher risk of developing CRPS after injury.

  • Sensory Modulation Dysfunction (SMD) involves difficulties in regulating sensory input and has been linked to altered pain processing.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate Sensory Modulation Dysfunction (SMD) as a potential risk factor for developing Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS).

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study involving 44 individuals with CRPS and 204 healthy controls.
  • Participants completed the Sensory Responsiveness Questionnaire-Intensity Scale (SRQ-IS).
  • Physicians assessed CRPS severity using the CRPS Severity Score (CSS).

Main Results:

  • SMD was present in 34% of individuals with CRPS and 12% of healthy controls (p<0.001).
  • Individuals with sensory over-responsiveness had 2.68 times higher risk, and those with sensory under-responsiveness had 8.21 times higher risk of CRPS (p=0.03 and p=0.01, respectively).

Conclusions:

  • Sensory Modulation Dysfunction (SMD), especially sensory under-responsiveness, may be a significant risk factor for CRPS.
  • Screening for SMD is recommended for individuals following limb injury to identify those at risk for CRPS.
  • A clinical tool is proposed for immediate risk assessment post-injury.
