Towards an Urban Vibrancy Model: A Soundscape Approach
1UCL Institute for Environmental Design and Engineering, The Bartlett, University College London (UCL), Central House, 14 Upper Woburn Place, London WC1H 0NN, UK. f.aletta@ucl.ac.uk.
This study developed a predictive model for soundscape vibrancy, crucial for urban environmental design. The model uses physical sound and visual elements to predict how engaging a soundscape feels to people.
Area of Science:
- Environmental Psychology
- Acoustics
- Urban Design
Background:
- Soundscape research often focuses on tranquility, neglecting actively engaging soundscapes.
- Predictive models for urban soundscape design are needed, especially for the vibrancy dimension.
Purpose of the Study:
- To establish a predictive model for soundscape vibrancy using physical parameters.
- To provide designers and practitioners with tools for managing actively engaging urban soundscapes.
Main Methods:
- A group interview identified influential factors for vibrancy perception.
- Laboratory experiments collected vibrancy perception data across UK and China locations.
- Physical aural and visual parameters were used as indicators in the predictive model.
Main Results:
- A predictive model incorporating Roughness, Presence of People, Fluctuation Strength, Loudness, and Presence of Music explained 76% of vibrancy score variance.
- Vibrancy scores correlated significantly with eventfulness but not pleasantness.
- Vibrancy perception is context-dependent, influenced by both auditory and visual elements.
Conclusions:
- The developed model offers a tool for predicting and designing vibrant soundscapes.
- Vibrancy is a distinct perceptual dimension influenced by a combination of sound and visual environmental factors.
- Future research should consider the interplay of soundscape and visual scenery in urban design.
