Lung Capacity01:47

Lung Capacity

56.4K
The air in the lungs is measured in volumes and capacities. Lung volume measures reflect the amount of air taken in, released, or left over after a lung function, like a single inhalation. Lung capacity measures are sums of two or more lung volume measures.

Simplified Synchronous Machine Model

789
The Synchronous Machine Model is a fundamental tool in analyzing and ensuring the transient stability of power systems. This model simplifies the representation of a synchronous machine under balanced three-phase positive-sequence conditions, assuming constant excitation and ignoring losses and saturation. The model is pivotal for understanding the behavior of synchronous generators connected to a power grid, particularly during transient events.
In this model, each generator is connected to a...

What is an Experiment?

18.9K
An experiment is a planned activity carried out under controlled conditions. The purpose of an experiment is to investigate the relationship between two variables. When one variable causes change in another, we call the first variable the explanatory or independent variable. The affected variable is called the response or dependent variable. In a randomized experiment, the researcher manipulates values of the explanatory variable and measures the resulting changes in the response variable. The...

Thomson's e/m Experiment

6.9K
In a beam of charged particles created by a heated cathode, the particles move at different speeds. However, many applications need a beam with uniform particle speeds. An arrangement known as a velocity selector uses electric and magnetic fields to pick particles with a particular speed from the beam.
A particle with charge q, speed v, and mass m enters an area from the top, where the magnetic and electric fields are perpendicular both to the particle's motion and to one another. The magnetic...

Controls in Experiments01:13

Controls in Experiments

17.7K
When conducting an experiment, it is crucial to have control to reduce bias and accurately measure the dependent variables. It also marks the results more reliable. Controls are elements in an experiment that have the same characteristics as the treatment groups but are not affected by the independent variable. By sorting these data into control and experimental conditions, the relationship between the dependent and independent variables can be drawn. A randomized experiment always includes a...

Area of Science:

  • Thoracic Surgery
  • Surgical Oncology
  • Pulmonology

Background:

  • Synchronous multiple lung cancer (SMPLC) detection is rising due to advanced imaging.
  • SMPLC is a rare condition with limited surgical expertise.
  • Surgical resection offers the only potential cure for SMPLC.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To present successful surgical management of SMPLC.
  • To demonstrate the efficacy of aggressive surgical therapy in SMPLC cases.
  • To highlight the utility of video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) for SMPLC.

Main Methods:

  • Case report presentation of two SMPLC patients.
  • Surgical intervention using video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS).
  • Focus on aggressive resection strategies for synchronous tumors.

Main Results:

  • Successful complete resection of synchronous multiple lung cancers in both cases.
  • Patients experienced positive outcomes following VATS.
  • Demonstrated feasibility of VATS for complex SMPLC cases.

Conclusions:

  • Aggressive surgical therapy, particularly VATS, is a viable and effective treatment for SMPLC.
  • Minimally invasive approaches can achieve complete resection in SMPLC.
  • Further research into VATS for SMPLC is warranted given its potential benefits.
