Vision is the result of light being detected and transduced into neural signals by the retina of the eye. This information is then further analyzed and interpreted by the brain. First, light enters the front of the eye and is focused by the cornea and lens onto the retina—a thin sheet of neural tissue lining the back of the eye. Because of refraction through the convex lens of the eye, images are projected onto the retina upside-down and reversed.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To conduct a 10-year retrospective analysis of firework-associated eye trauma.
  • To analyze influencing factors and trauma severity.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic review of 149 patients treated between 2007-2017.
  • Analysis of age, gender, laterality, visual acuity, and ocular trauma score (OTS).
  • Categorization of trauma severity and causative firework devices.

  • 165 eyes treated; mean age 28.5 years; 78% male; 75.8% bystanders.
  • Bangers (59%) and rockets (33%) were the most common causes.
  • Older patients had significantly higher OTS and lower visual acuity (p<0.01).

  • Firework eye trauma predominantly affects young males, often bystanders.
  • Severe injuries are more common in older age groups.
  • Enhanced educational efforts and prophylaxis are needed in Germany.
