Monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) risk is linked to lifestyle, not just occupation. Cigarette smoking and proximity to industrial sites significantly increase MGUS development risk.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence of MGUS in refinery waste workers.
  • To identify potential risk factors associated with MGUS development in this cohort.
  • To assess the association between occupational exposure and MGUS.

Main Methods:

  • Serum electrophoresis was used to detect abnormal gamma globulin levels.
  • Biological monitoring of urine samples for metals and t,t-muconic acid was performed.
  • Multivariate analysis was employed to identify significant risk factors.

Main Results:

  • 16% of the 77 refinery waste workers studied showed abnormal gamma globulin levels, indicative of MGUS.
  • Elevated IgG was the most common abnormality (67%), followed by IgM (17%), IgA (8%), and oligoclonal (8%).
  • Cigarette smoking and residence near industrial sites were significantly associated with a higher risk of MGUS (p < 0.001), while occupational exposure was not.

Conclusions:

  • Lifestyle factors, specifically cigarette smoking and residential proximity to industrial areas, are significant risk factors for MGUS.
  • Occupational exposure in this cohort of refinery waste workers was not directly associated with an increased risk of MGUS.
  • Further large-scale, population-based research is warranted to confirm these findings and evaluate the strength of associations.
