Summary

A rare case of bilateral posterior lenticonus and persistent fetal vasculature (PFV) in a 10-year-old girl is presented. This finding suggests PFV may play a role in the development of posterior lenticonus.

Background:

  • Persistent fetal vasculature (PFV) is a congenital anomaly resulting from the failure of regression of the primary hyaloid vascular system.
  • Posterior lenticonus is a rare condition characterized by a conical protrusion of the posterior lens surface, often associated with genetic syndromes.

Observation:

  • A 10-year-old female presented with bilateral central cataracts and posterior lenticonus.
  • Intraoperative findings revealed bilateral persistent fetal vasculature (PFV).

Findings:

  • This case represents the first reported instance of the association between bilateral posterior lenticonus and PFV.
  • The co-occurrence supports the hypothesis that PFV may be involved in the pathogenesis of posterior lenticonus.
