    Summary

Total knee arthroplasty offers reliable pain relief and improved mobility for patients with severe knee damage. Despite challenges like patellar malalignment, it remains the preferred surgical option when conservative treatments fail.

    Area of Science:

    • Orthopedic Surgery
    • Biomedical Engineering

    Background:

    • Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) continues to evolve, yet challenges persist.
    • Patient selection is crucial for successful outcomes in knee replacement surgery.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the early outcomes and complications of total knee arthroplasty.
    • To assess the effectiveness of Guépar hinge and Marmor modular prostheses in TKA.

    Main Methods:

    • A retrospective review of 25 TKAs performed in 22 patients over 4.5 years.
    • Utilized Guépar hinge (21 knees) and Marmor modular (4 knees) prostheses with acrylic cement.

    Main Results:

    • No serious early general complications or infections were reported.
    • The most frequent complication was patellar malalignment (17 cases), with 2 dislocations.
    • Prosthetic loosening occurred in 2 knees; one required successful fusion.
    • Significant improvements in pain relief, joint movement, and walking capacity were observed.

    Conclusions:

    • Total knee arthroplasty provides reliable pain relief and functional improvement.
    • Patellar complications are common but often do not compromise overall results.
    • Arthroplasty remains the gold standard for severe knee damage unresponsive to conservative care.
