Social Proof00:52

Social Proof

32.4K
Social proof is a form of persuasion based on comparison and conformity. People compare their behavior and actions to what others are doing and will change to conform to do what their peers do.

Secretory Phase01:19

Secretory Phase

2.2K
The secretory phase of the menstrual cycle, spanning from day 14 to 28 in a typical 28-day cycle, is a period of significant physiological changes in the female reproductive system. This phase commences immediately after ovulation and is characterized by the preparation of the endometrium for potential embryo implantation.
Following ovulation, the corpus luteum, a temporary endocrine structure, produces progesterone and estrogens. These hormones stimulate the growth and coiling of endometrial...

Social Scripts02:10

Social Scripts

10.3K
People tend to know what behavior is expected of them in specific, familiar settings. A script is a person’s knowledge about the sequence of events expected in a specific setting (Schank & Abelson, 1977). Essentially, scripts are a particular kind of schema, one containing default values for the features within an event. In the restaurant example, the script's features include the props (e.g., tables, menu, food, and money), the roles to be played (e.g., customer and waiter),...

Social Traps01:41

Social Traps

26.9K
Social traps are negative situations where people get caught in a direction or relationship that later proves to be unpleasant, with no easy way to back out of or avoid. The concept was orignally introduced by John Platt who applied psychology to Garrett Hardin's "Tragedy of the Commons", where in New England herd owners could let their cattle graze in the common ground. This situation seems like a good idea, but an individual could have an advantage. If they owned...

Antibody Structure01:10

Antibody Structure

65.6K
Overview
Antibodies, also known as immunoglobulins (Ig), are essential players of the adaptive immune system. These antigen-binding proteins are produced by B cells and make up 20 percent of the total blood plasma by weight. In mammals, antibodies fall into five different classes, which each elicits a different biological response upon antigen binding.
The Y-Shaped Structure of Antibodies Consists of Four Polypeptide Chains
Antibodies consist of four polypeptide chains: two identical heavy...

Social Facilitation01:04

Social Facilitation

36.6K
Not all intergroup interactions lead to negative outcomes. Sometimes, being in a group situation can improve performance. Social facilitation occurs when an individual performs better when an audience is watching than when the individual performs the behavior alone. This typically occurs when people are performing a task for which they are skilled.

Summary

Higher salivary secretory immunoglobulin A (SIgA) levels, a measure of mucosal immunity, correlate with greater social network activity and sociability in community members. This suggests a link between social connections and immune function.

Area of Science:

  • Social immunology
  • Network science
  • Behavioral immunology

Background:

  • Social networks are increasingly recognized for their biological underpinnings, influencing health outcomes.
  • Previous research has focused on individual-level social effects, with network-scale investigations remaining limited.
  • Mucosal immunity, particularly salivary secretory immunoglobulin A (SIgA), is a key physiological marker potentially influenced by social factors.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between salivary secretory immunoglobulin A (SIgA) and social network structure.
  • To explore social determinants of health at the network level using bioscience and network modeling.
  • To determine if mucosal immunity is patterned by social connections within a network.

Main Methods:

  • Data collected from a large mixed-gender social organization (n=155).
  • Friendship network data and saliva samples were obtained.
  • Salivary SIgA levels were assayed and analyzed using exponential random graph modeling.

Main Results:

  • Salivary SIgA levels were positively associated with reporting more friendship ties (social network activity).
  • This association remained significant after controlling for demographic factors, personality traits (extraversion), and network popularity.
  • Network structural and organizational processes were also accounted for in the analysis.

Conclusions:

  • SIgA is positively associated with an individual's sociability and engagement within their social network.
  • Findings support social integration theories linking social relationships to health.
  • Humoral immunity, specifically SIgA, may act as a mediator in the relationship between social integration and health.
