    Summary

    Technetium Tc-99m dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) imaging may overestimate kidney function in cases of obstruction. This study in rats demonstrated a significant overestimation of at least 17% in obstructed kidneys.

    Background:

    • Technetium Tc-99m dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) scintigraphy is used to assess kidney function.
    • Overestimation of renal function in obstructed kidneys via DMSA imaging has been suggested but not well-quantified.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To quantify the degree of overestimation of kidney function by Tc-99m DMSA imaging in a model of partial ureteral obstruction.
    • To investigate the clinical relevance of functional overestimation in obstructed kidneys.

    • A rat model was used to create partial obstruction of one ureter.
    • Relative Tc-99m DMSA uptake was measured 4 hours after intravenous injection.
