Long-term depression, or LTD, is one of the ways by which synaptic plasticity—changes in the strength of chemical synapses—can occur in the brain. LTD is the process of synaptic weakening that occurs over time between pre and postsynaptic neuronal connections. Background:

Perinatal depression (PD) screening is established, yet treatment options and mental health (MH) provider access remain limited.
Nurse practitioners (NPs) can bridge this gap by implementing collaborative treatment models for women experiencing PD.

Purpose of the Study:

This DNP inquiry evaluated a stepped collaborative care model (CCM) to assess its effectiveness in improving referral-to-evaluation times and reducing depression scores over six months.
The study focused on women within an NP MH practice.

Main Methods:

The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale was administered to 37 women at psychiatric evaluation and follow-up MH visits over six months.
Data on time from referral to evaluation and depression scores were analyzed following IRB and client approval.
