Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells01:13

Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells

28.1K
Stem cells are undifferentiated cells that divide and produce different types of cells. Ordinarily, cells that have differentiated into a specific cell type are post-mitotic—that is, they no longer divide. However, scientists have found a way to reprogram these mature cells so that they “de-differentiate” and return to an unspecialized, proliferative state. These cells are also pluripotent like embryonic stem cells—able to produce all cell types—and are therefore...

Vision

60.1K
Vision is the result of light being detected and transduced into neural signals by the retina of the eye. This information is then further analyzed and interpreted by the brain. First, light enters the front of the eye and is focused by the cornea and lens onto the retina—a thin sheet of neural tissue lining the back of the eye. Because of refraction through the convex lens of the eye, images are projected onto the retina upside-down and reversed.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Medical Technology

Background:

  • The field of Ophthalmology and Retina is experiencing significant growth in telemedicine applications.
  • Advancements in ophthalmic imaging technologies are driving this expansion.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To provide an update and overview of the current literature on telemedicine applications in retina care.
  • To explore the potential of telemedicine in addressing the increasing demand for clinical evaluation of retinal diseases.

Main Methods:

  • Literature review of current telemedicine applications in retina.
  • Analysis of technological advancements in ophthalmic imaging and automated image analysis.

Main Results:

  • Retinal telemedicine is most commonly applied to diabetic retinopathy and retinopathy of prematurity.
  • Telemedicine shows potential to alleviate clinical evaluation demands and improve access to education through tele-education systems.
  • Automated image analysis and deep learning can efficiently process large volumes of images from telemedicine systems.

Conclusions:

  • Telemedicine can serve as a valuable adjunct to, but not a replacement for, physical clinical examinations.
  • Retinal telemedicine programs require careful and appropriate integration into existing clinical systems.
