Heterotrophic bacteria can efficiently remove toxic hydrogen sulfide (H2S) by oxidizing it to elemental sulfur and thiosulfate. Immobilization with iron oxide nanoparticles further enhances this H2S biotreatment capability.
Area of Science:
- Environmental microbiology
- Biotechnology
- Bioremediation
Background:
- Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a toxic and odorous industrial byproduct.
- Chemolithotrophic bacteria are traditionally used for H2S remediation.
- Heterotrophic bacteria possess enzymes like sulfide:quinone oxidoreductase for H2S oxidation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the potential of heterotrophic bacteria for H2S biotreatment.
- To evaluate the efficiency of cultured heterotrophic bacteria in oxidizing H2S.
- To assess the impact of immobilization and nanoparticles on H2S removal.
Main Methods:
- Culturing heterotrophic bacteria with organic compounds.
- Measuring H2S oxidation rates in bacterial suspensions.
- Testing immobilized bacteria with and without Fe3O4 nanoparticles.
Main Results:
- Heterotrophic bacteria rapidly oxidized H2S to zero-valence sulfur and thiosulfate without acidification.
- Observed sulfide oxidation rates ranged from 8 to 50 µmol min⁻¹ g⁻¹ cell dry weight.
- Immobilized bacteria, especially with Fe3O4 nanoparticles, showed efficient H2S removal.
Conclusions:
- Heterotrophic bacteria are effective for H2S biotreatment under aerobic conditions.
- Immobilization and Fe3O4 nanoparticles enhance H2S removal efficiency.
- This approach offers a promising alternative for industrial H2S remediation.
