Sleep disorders (SDs) significantly increase the risk of developing chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU). This population-based study found that individuals with SDs were nearly twice as likely to develop CSU compared to those without.
Area of Science:
- Dermatology
- Sleep Medicine
- Epidemiology
Background:
- Chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU) is often associated with sleep disorders (SDs) due to pruritus.
- The potential role of SDs in the development of CSU requires further investigation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the association between sleep disorders and the subsequent development of chronic spontaneous urticaria.
- To determine if sleep disorders increase the risk of developing CSU.
Main Methods:
- A retrospective, population-based matched-cohort study using a Taiwanese database.
- Included 105,892 patients with new-onset SDs and 105,892 matched controls, followed for 10 years.
- Cox proportional hazard regression analysis was used to assess CSU risk.
Main Results:
- The incidence of CSU was 53.4 per 10,000 person-years in the SD cohort versus 28.3 per 10,000 person-years in the control cohort.
- Patients with SDs had a significantly higher risk of developing CSU (adjusted hazard ratio = 1.83).
- Comorbidities were more prevalent in the SD cohort.
Conclusions:
- Sleep disorders are associated with an increased risk of developing chronic spontaneous urticaria.
- This study highlights a potential bidirectional relationship between SDs and CSU.
- Further research into the mechanisms linking SDs and CSU is warranted.
