Odontology·2018

Material thickness significantly impacts the color and translucency of dental composites. Thicker specimens showed greater color variation, affecting shade matching in clinical applications.

Area of Science:

  • Dental Materials Science
  • Restorative Dentistry
  • Color Science in Dentistry

Background:

  • Accurate shade matching is crucial for aesthetic dental restorations.
  • Understanding factors influencing composite optical properties is essential for predictable clinical outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effect of varying material thickness on the L*a*b* color coordinates and translucency of different composite shades.
  • To quantify color differences (ΔE00) and transparency changes across different thicknesses and backgrounds.

Main Methods:

  • Three commercial resin composite materials (Essentia, Brillant Everglow, Inspiro) were fabricated into disc specimens of 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 mm thickness.
  • L*a*b* coordinates were measured using a reflectance spectrophotometer against black and white backgrounds.

  • Transparency and color differences (ΔE00) were calculated for each specimen.
  • Main Results:

    • Median ΔE00 values increased with composite thickness, indicating greater color variation, especially over 1.0 mm.
    • Transparency decreased significantly as material thickness increased, ranging from 14.8% to 34.6% across tested materials and thicknesses.
    • Color variations were observed on both black and white backgrounds, with higher ΔE00 values generally noted on the black background for thicker specimens.

    Conclusions:

    • Composite material thickness is a significant factor influencing L*a*b* color coordinates and translucency.
    • These findings highlight the importance of considering material thickness during shade selection and application for achieving optimal aesthetic results in restorative dentistry.
