Men experiencing prenatal depressive symptoms are at higher risk for postnatal depressive symptoms (PDS). Anxiety significantly mediates this relationship, highlighting the need for paternal mental health support during pregnancy and after childbirth.
Area of Science:
- Psychiatry
- Public Health
- Epidemiology
Background:
- Paternal mental health is crucial for family well-being.
- Prenatal and postnatal depressive symptoms in fathers are increasingly recognized as significant health concerns.
- Limited research exists on the predictive relationship between fathers' prenatal and postnatal depressive symptoms.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the relationship between men's prenatal and postnatal depressive symptoms (PDS).
- To identify mediating factors, such as anxiety, and moderating factors, such as income, in this relationship.
Main Methods:
- A descriptive study involving 403 fathers recruited from public health clinics in Zanjan, Iran.
- Participants were assessed during the third trimester of pregnancy and again eight weeks postpartum using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS).
- Data analysis included descriptive statistics and path analysis with a 95% confidence level.
Main Results:
- A high level of prenatal depressive symptoms was a significant predictor of a high level of PDS.
- State, trait, and total anxiety showed significant total mediating effects on PDS.
- Income did not have a statistically significant moderating effect on PDS.
Conclusions:
- Elevated prenatal depressive symptoms in fathers represent a substantial risk factor for developing postnatal depressive symptoms.
- Healthcare providers should prioritize paternal psychological health during the prenatal and postpartum periods.
- Intervention and clinical assessments for paternal PDS should consider identified predictor and mediating factors, particularly anxiety.

Freezing Point Depression and Boiling Point Elevation
The boiling point of a liquid is the temperature at which its vapor pressure is equal to ambient atmospheric pressure. Since the vapor pressure of a solution is lowered due to the presence of nonvolatile solutes, it stands to reason that the solution’s boiling point will subsequently be increased. Vapor pressure increases with temperature, and so a solution will require a higher temperature than will pure solvent to achieve any given vapor pressure, including one...
