Background:

Contact hypersensitivity is prevalent in adolescents, yet literature data is scarce.
Adolescents frequently use cosmetics, wear jewelry, and get tattoos, increasing allergen exposure.
Limited understanding of adolescent-specific contact hypersensitivity patterns exists.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the frequency and common allergens associated with contact hypersensitivity in adolescents.
To provide data on adolescent patch testing outcomes.
To identify specific allergen patterns in adolescent males and females, and those with atopic dermatitis.

Main Methods:

A retrospective, noninterventional cohort study.
100 adolescents (aged 13-18) underwent consecutive patch testing.
Data collected on patient demographics, allergens, reaction times, and lesion locations.

Main Results:

51% of adolescents tested positive for contact hypersensitivity.
Nickel, thimerosal, para-phenylenediamine, cobalt, and fragrance mix I were the most frequent allergens.
Delayed reactions (day 7) were noted in 13%; hands and face were commonly affected.
Adolescents with atopic dermatitis showed high rates of contact hypersensitivity, often linked to skincare ingredients.

Conclusions:

Contact hypersensitivity is common in adolescents, necessitating awareness and diagnostic evaluation.
Patch testing, including a 7-day evaluation, is advised for therapy-resistant facial and hand lesions.
This study offers crucial insights into adolescent contact hypersensitivity in Hungary, highlighting metals, fragrances, and skincare products as key allergens.
