Summary

Adolescents born post-term (after 42 weeks gestation) showed reduced exercise capacity compared to those born at term. Central cardiovascular function and blood pressure remained unaffected, suggesting peripheral vascular changes may explain the lower aerobic fitness.

  • Limited data exists on aerobic capacity and cardiovascular function in adolescents born post-term.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate aerobic capacity and cardiovascular function in adolescents born post-term compared to those born at term.

Main Methods:

  • Study included 48 adolescents (25 post-term, 23 term-born).
  • Assessed metabolic markers, body composition (DXA), 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure, maximal exercise capacity, and cardiac MRI (rest and exercise).

Main Results:

  • Post-term born adolescents exhibited significantly lower exercise capacity (44.5 vs 47.8 ml/kgffm/min; p=0.04).
  • No significant differences were found in left ventricular volumes (cardiac MRI) or 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure between groups.

Conclusions:

  • Post-term birth is associated with reduced aerobic exercise capacity in adolescence.
  • Central cardiac function and blood pressure were not different, suggesting peripheral vascular alterations may underlie the reduced fitness.
