    Background:

    • Residency match interviews and communication can cause significant distress for applicants.
    • Further study is needed to understand these applicant experiences.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To quantify and qualify interview behaviors during the 2015-2016 National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) Match.
    • To gather applicant perspectives on post-interview communication and desired policy changes.

    Main Methods:

    • An anonymous survey with 31 questions was distributed to residency candidates.
    • The survey focused on interview experiences across all interviewed programs.

    Main Results:

    • 72% of applicants were asked about other interviews, 38% about marital status, and 17% about children.
    • Female applicants were more often asked about children (22% vs. 14%).
    • 91% engaged in post-interview communication, with 70% reporting distress when informing their top program of their rank.

    Conclusions:

    • Many residency applicants face interview questions violating the NRMP Code of Conduct.
    • A majority of applicants desire more regulated and less frequent post-interview communication.
