Antibodies, also known as immunoglobulins (Ig), are essential players of the adaptive immune system. Hair cells are the sensory receptors of the auditory system—they transduce mechanical sound waves into electrical energy that the nervous system can understand. Hair cells are located in the organ of Corti within the cochlea of the inner ear, between the basilar and tectorial membranes. The actual sensory receptors are called inner hair cells. Summary

A rare congenital defect, frontoethmoidal encephalocele, caused seizures in a young cat. Early diagnosis and antiepileptic treatment led to seizure control.

  • Frontoethmoidal encephaloceles are rare congenital malformations.
  • Seizures in young cats can indicate underlying neurological abnormalities.

Observation:

  • An 11-month-old domestic shorthair cat presented with generalized tonic-clonic seizures.
  • Physical examination revealed left microphthalmia and right-sided hemiparesis.
  • Brain MRI identified a left frontoethmoidal encephalocele and left microphthalmia.

Findings:

  • The cat was diagnosed with a left frontoethmoidal encephalocele.
  • Conservative management with phenobarbitone and levetiracetam was initiated.
  • Seizures were well-controlled 12 months post-diagnosis.
