    Summary

    Human parvovirus (HPV) causes aplastic crises in children with thalassemia. Detecting anti-HPV IgM confirmed recent HPV infection in these patients, linking the virus to their aplastic crisis.

    Background:

    • Chronic hemolytic anemias, such as thalassemia, predispose patients to aplastic crises.
    • Human parvovirus (specifically Parvovirus B19) is a known cause of aplastic crises.

    Observation:

    • Four children with different types of thalassemia (alpha and beta, major and intermediate forms) experienced aplastic crises.
    • Serum samples from these children were analyzed for viral markers.

    Findings:

    • All four pediatric patients tested positive for specific anti-human parvovirus IgM antibodies.
    • The presence of IgM indicates a recent or active infection with human parvovirus.

    Implications:

    • This study reinforces the causal link between human parvovirus infection and aplastic crises in pediatric thalassemia patients.
    • Early diagnosis and management of parvovirus B19 infection are crucial for children with thalassemia to prevent or mitigate aplastic crises.
