    Background:

    • Nigrostriatal dopaminergic activity is implicated in adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)-induced grooming.
    • The striato-nigro-collicular pathway is a proposed route for dopaminergic modulation of ACTH-induced excessive grooming.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the role of the superior colliculus in ACTH(1-24)-induced grooming.
    • To determine if GABAergic agents applied locally to the superior colliculus can modulate ACTH-induced excessive grooming.

    Main Methods:

    • Administered GABAergic agents (picrotoxin and muscimol) into the superior colliculus in rats.
    • Administered ACTH(1-24) intraventricularly.
    • Created lesions in the superior colliculus to assess its role in specific behaviors.

    Main Results:

    • Intra-collicular picrotoxin (GABA antagonist) suppressed ACTH-induced grooming.

    • The superior colliculus may be directly affected by systemically administered picrotoxin, leading to running fit behavior.
