Five cephalometric analyses for diagnosing skeletal jaw discrepancies were evaluated. All methods, including ANB, Wits appraisal, Beta angle, Yen angle, and W angle, proved equally valid and reliable for orthodontic diagnosis.
Area of Science:
- Orthodontics
- Cephalometrics
- Dentofacial analysis
Background:
- Sagittal jaw analysis is crucial for orthodontic diagnosis.
- Existing lateral cephalometric analyses have limitations.
- This study evaluates five common cephalometric analyses.
Purpose of the Study:
- To compare the validity and reliability of ANB, Wits appraisal, Beta angle, Yen angle, and W angle.
- To assess their diagnostic accuracy for skeletal classes.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective analysis of 209 pretreatment cephalographs (92 males, 117 females).
- Measurements included ANB, Wits appraisal, Beta angle, W angle, and Yen angle.
- Skeletal classes determined using measurements, incisor classification, and profile data.
Main Results:
- All five analyses showed statistically significant differences across skeletal classes (p < 0.05).
- No single analysis demonstrated superior reliability.
- All evaluated cephalometric analyses were found equally reliable for diagnosing skeletal discrepancies.
Conclusions:
- All five skeletal cephalometric sagittal analyses are reliable for orthodontic diagnosis.
- These analyses can be used interchangeably in clinical practice.
