  • To inform clinical practice regarding post-fracture care.

  • Retrospective analysis of Medicare Standard Analytic Files (2005-2009).
  • Inclusion of patients >65 years with osteoporosis/osteopenia and an initial fragility fracture.
  • Tracking of recurrent fracture incidence and type over 36 months.

Main Results:

  • Over 1 million initial fragility fractures were identified.
  • 11.3% of patients experienced a recurrent fracture within 3 years.
  • Hip fractures were the most common subsequent fracture type (6.5%); vertebral and proximal humerus fractures had higher recurrence association.

Conclusions:

  • Any fragility fracture confers a notable risk of subsequent fractures, especially hip fractures.
  • Patients with fragility fractures require evaluation for underlying risk factors like osteoporosis.
  • Timely intervention can mitigate the risk of recurrent fractures and improve outcomes.
