Multi-professional teamwork is common in human services, presenting unique challenges.
Professional identity significantly shapes individual and team dynamics within collaborative settings.
Existing research often overlooks the interplay between identity formation and team processes.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the interplay between professional identity formation and multi-professional teamwork.
To explore how individual identity development impacts team activities and outcomes.
To identify challenges and prospects of such collaborations from a professional identity perspective.

Main Methods:

A process study design was employed, examining two cases of multi-professional teamwork in family care.
Data collection involved in-depth interviews with team members and managers.
Analysis utilized a stepwise approach, alternating between individual and team levels.

Main Results:

A mutual interplay exists between teamwork processes and individual professional identity formation.
Unique individual identification processes influence multi-professional team activities differently.
Alternative patterns of interplay between individual identity and team-level processes were identified.

Conclusions:

Team composition and early team development are critical for achieving collaborative intentions in multi-professional teams.
Knowledge on mature professionals' identity formation is advanced, highlighting individual variations.
Conceptualizing the links between professional identity formation and multi-professional teamwork is achieved.
