Negative and Cognitive Symptoms of Schizophrenia01:30

Negative and Cognitive Symptoms of Schizophrenia

584
Negative symptoms of schizophrenia indicate a reduction or absence of typical behaviors and emotional responses found in healthy individuals, while positive symptoms reflect an excess or distortion of normal functioning.
Negative Symptoms
Negative symptoms of schizophrenia manifest as deficits in normal emotional and behavioral functioning, profoundly impacting daily life. Individuals with schizophrenia often display a flat affect, characterized by a near-total absence of emotional expression,...

Positive Symptoms Schizophrenia: Hallucinations and Delusions

614
Schizophrenia is a complex psychiatric disorder characterized by a range of symptoms that significantly impact cognition, behavior, and emotional regulation. Among these, the positive symptoms stand out as they involve the addition or exaggeration of normal mental functions, deviating markedly from typical behavior and perception. Hallucinations and delusions are prominent positive symptoms, each profoundly affecting the individual's experience of reality.

Positive Symptoms of Schizophrenia: Hallucinations and Delusions

656
Schizophrenia is a complex mental health disorder that can manifest with various positive symptoms, including thought, movement, and behavior disorders. These symptoms significantly disrupt cognitive and motor functions, leading to profound effects on an individual's ability to engage with the world.
Thought Disorders
Disorganized and unusual thought processes mark thought disorders in schizophrenia. One key feature is disorganized speech, where an individual's conversation includes...

Positive, Negative, and Zero Work

22.2K
Work is done on an object when energy is transferred to the object. In other words, work is done when a force acts on a body that undergoes a displacement from one position to another. By definition, the work done by a force is the integral of the force with respect to the displacement along its path. Forces can vary as a function of position, and displacements can occur along various paths between two points. The magnitude of a force multiplied by the cosine of the angle that the force makes...

Graphs of Equations in Two Variables

253
An equation with two variables, typically written in the form y = f(x) or Ax + By = C, describes a relationship between quantities represented by x and y. Each solution to such an equation is an ordered pair (x, y) that satisfies the equation when substituted. These pairs can be represented graphically to understand the variables' relationship visually.A common technique for constructing the graph of a two-variable equation is to create a value table. Begin by choosing several values for the...

Systems of Linear Equations in Two Variables

310
Solving a system of linear equations is a fundamental concept in algebra. A system of equations consists of two or more linear equations involving the same set of variables. One of the most efficient algebraic methods for solving such systems is the substitution method. This technique involves expressing one variable in terms of the other from one equation and substituting it into the second equation. This method is particularly useful when one of the equations is easily rearranged.Consider the...

Summary

This study found no evidence that negative symptoms predict positive symptoms in schizophrenia. The relationship between positive and negative symptoms was ambiguous, suggesting complex interactions in the disorder.

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry and Mental Health
  • Neuroscience
  • Clinical Psychology

Background:

  • Schizophrenia network models propose symptom interactions.
  • Cross-sectional data show symptom associations, but causality requires longitudinal analysis.
  • The European Schizophrenia Cohort (EuroSC) offers longitudinal data for causal inference.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the causal relationship between positive and negative symptoms of schizophrenia using longitudinal data.
  • To test network models of schizophrenia by examining symptom directionality over time.
  • To clarify the predictive relationship between positive and negative symptom dimensions.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized latent variable structural equation modeling on EuroSC data (N=1208).
  • Assessed positive and negative symptoms using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale over 24 months.
  • Controlled for depressed mood and antipsychotic medication effects.

Main Results:

  • Positive and negative symptoms were persistent and strongly auto-correlated.
  • Cross-sectional associations between positive and negative symptoms were observed.
  • No significant evidence found for negative symptoms predicting positive symptoms; positive-to-negative symptom prediction was ambiguous.

Conclusions:

  • Longitudinal data did not support negative symptoms predicting positive symptoms in schizophrenia.
  • The predictive relationship from positive to negative symptoms was inconsistent over time.
  • Findings suggest complex, possibly bidirectional, interactions between schizophrenia symptom dimensions.
